Pinhole Photographs
Many years ago, I was doing studio portraiture. There was a special soft-focus lens that had a disc with multiple different apertures of varying sizes on the disc, the disc would be placed in the lens. This would produce several overlapping projections of the subject onto the film, giving a soft, dreamy look to the final portrait. I was considering this idea of multiple overlapping images and began to experiment with this idea using pinhole lenses. I made several different pinhole lenses and tried a number of different pinholes. I found I liked nine holes, which produced 9 different overlapping images. This created a mosaic effect with abstracted distorted subjects. These photographs are a departure from the way I normally photograph, with sharp focus and detailed subjects. Every now and then playful experimenting is important.
